Understanding IUI & Follicular Study
What is IUI?
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment where specially prepared sperm is directly placed into the uterus around the time of ovulation. It increases the chances of fertilization by bringing sperm closer to the egg. At Krishvi IVF (Ahmedabad, Gujarat), IUI is performed with advanced techniques to maximize success rates.
How is IUI Done?
- Ovulation is tracked by Sonography.
- On the day of ovulation, the semen sample is collected and processed in the lab
- Using a thin catheter, the washed sperm is placed directly into the uterus.
- The procedure is simple, painless, and takes only a few minutes.
Indications for IUI
IUI is often recommended in cases of: – Mild male infertility (low sperm count or motility) – Cervical factor infertility – Unexplained infertility – Ejaculation dysfunction – Couples with donor sperm requirement
Prerequisites for IUI
- Open fallopian tubes (confirmed by HSG/sonohysterography)
- Adequate ovarian reserve
- Normal or mild sperm abnormalities
Rest During IUI
Complete bed rest is not required after the procedure. Light daily activities can be continued, but strenuous exercise or heavy lifting should be avoided for 1–2 days.
Risks in IUI
- Mild cramping or spotting
- Rarely infection
- Increased chance of multiple pregnancy (if fertility drugs are used)
Success Rate of IUI
Success depends on age, fertility condition, and sperm quality. On average, the success rate per cycle is about 10–20%, higher in women under 35.
Maximum Number of IUI Cycles Before IVF
Generally, 3–4 cycles of IUI are attempted. If unsuccessful, IVF is recommended for better chances of conception.
What is Follicular Study?
Follicular Study (also called Follicular Monitoring) is a series of ultrasound scans that track the growth and development of ovarian follicles, helping to determine the best time for ovulation and conception.
Why is it Done?
- To monitor ovulation in natural cycles
- To assess response to fertility drugs
- To time IUI or IVF procedures accurately
When & How is it Done?
- The study usually begins on Day 2–3 of the menstrual cycle
- Scans are repeated every 2–3 days to measure follicle growth
- Once a follicle reaches maturity (18–22 mm), ovulation is expected, and treatment or timed intercourse can be planned
Who Can Do a Follicular Study?
It is performed by a gynecologist or fertility specialist using a transvaginal ultrasound. At Krishvi IVF, follicular study is done with precision and care to ensure timely treatment.
Advantages of Follicular Study
- Accurate timing of ovulation
- Helps improve chances of conception
- Reduces unnecessary cycles
- Essential for planning IUI and IVF
Time Taken to Do Scan
Each scan takes about 5–10 minutes and is painless.
Key Takeaway
IUI and Follicular Study are often combined for better results. Follicular monitoring ensures insemination is timed precisely with ovulation, significantly improving success rates.
